English lyrics

Diluvium is a gothic rock / metal band from Serbia and this is their second disc. It has been six years since their last disc, Aurora, and From Always continues in the same style. Their music is very accessible with a nice mix of catchy, upbeat choruses and long, lightly progressive instrumentals. The songs are primarily guitar-driven with pervasive backing, often swirling, keys and feature a crunch and heaviness that puts them on the heavy end of rock or the light end of metal. Though there are occasional melancholy gothic touches, for the most part the songs are high-energy with surprisingly complex instrumental passages; perhaps not complex by progressive metal standards but definitely so by gothic rock standards.

Their female vocalist, Milica Plavsic, is excellent, with a smooth expressive singing style that is perfect for the music. Her delivery is strong and melodic and she takes interesting liberties with her vocal lines, frequently dramatically changing her emphasis and pitch to vary the emotional impact of the music. This again adds an almost progressive edge to the music, which further sets them apart from the ordinary.

It is inevitable, however, to compare From Always with Aurora. I find the melodies and instrumentals on Aurora incredibly fresh and exciting even today after many years and many listens; but when I listen to From Always, though I always enjoy the songs I am rarely absorbed in them and find myself easily letting the music drift into the background. It’s difficult to say exactly what’s missing on From Always, but in part the songs are generally more laid back and less exciting than those on Aurora, and Milica’s singing, though excellent, lacks the unique and arresting passion she brought to Aurora.
