In Tenebris is an electro-goth rock / metal band from United States of America and this is their debut disc. For the most part, the arrangements are driven by electronic keyboards with crunchy guitars serving as part of the rhythm along with thick bass lines and thundering drums. The keys set a pervasive, somewhat melancholy, gothic atmosphere with electronica and trip hop influences scattered throughout; the rhythm is contrastingly very heavy and often quite rocking and catchy. The songs are fairly straightforward though there is a pleasant variety of melodies and rhythms in each one so the music comes across as accessible and appealing rather than simplistic or overly repetitive.

But what makes this band really special is classically-trained vocalist Christina Fleming. She has one of the lushest and most engaging vocal styles I have ever heard, and it’s quite difficult to describe without actually hearing her. Her voice is very strong, confident and emotive, and she has a smooth, deliberate, sultry articulation, sometimes almost a melodic speaking, with usually either exquisitely beautiful or stirringly anthemic vocal melodies. She gives the music a hauntingly atmospheric and ethereal quality that is often just hypnotizing.

In Tenebris have created some of the most emotive and absorbing music I have heard in a long time, which is all the more amazing given the relative straightforwardness of their song-writing approach. In this respect perhaps they can be best compared to Evanescence, though their musical styles are quite different; but both bands create songs of incredible emotional impact within a very accessible musical genre, setting the standard for which other bands in the genre try, or should try, to attain.
