There are certain albums out there that I would consider to be classic albums. Renaissance’s "Turn of the Cards", Cocteau Twins’ "Heaven or Las Vegas", and Sirenia’s "At Sixes and Sevens" are just a few of these certain albums. "Relic Dances" would be added to this list as well. There is just something about this album that just makes it really enjoyable for me. This B’n’B band certainly delivered an awesome album back in 2003.
As with all B’n’B albums, this one contained two vocalists—a male growler, and a female singer (though, she doesn’t sing operatically at all). The growler certainly does a nice job on the album, though the female singer is quite sensational. Hanka Nogolova’s voice is very unlike any other female vocalist that I’ve come across in the genre. Her vocal timbre is very nice, and suits the music wonderfully—if you’re into female vocalists at all you must hear her. The music that backs up the singers is also a bit different from your everyday B’n’B band. The music is metal, though there are no symphonic qualities to the music at all. In fact, the album has almost an ethnic or tribal sound to it at times, which I really dig. There is a violin that plays throughout a lot of the numbers too, which also adds a very nice dimension to the music I think.
Song-wise, I have absolutely no quibbles. Every song on the album has its own unique personality, and one never gets bored whilst listening to any of them. My favorite song on the album changes quite regularly actually, but currently it’s "Lonely"—absolutely perfect vocals. Just take a listen to any of the songs though; from the upbeat "I Would Dance", to the catchy "Look", to the epic "Lonely", and to the final song "Trinity"—you can’t go wrong!
Anyone into female fronted metal albums, or B’n’B albums, need to check out this album now. It’s not only one of my favorite B’n’B albums, but one of my favorite albums ever—can’t recommend it enough!
