Whoever said “anticipation is half the fun” either is a big, fat liar or was not waiting for Kobra and the Lotus’s self-titled album. No, actually having Kobra and the Lotus is both halves of the fun! It is no secret that massive, full-throated voices are right down my alley. Couple Kobra Paige’s impressive pipes with muscular (yet nimble) guitar work, and you have a positively killer album in the finest NWOBHM tradition.

Edge of Attack

Every time Facebook seems like an endless time-suck of useless gob, someone slips us a band recommendation that makes our ears prick up with interest. One of our latest discoveries is the power metal quartet, Edge of Attack, from the snowy plains of Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. These newcomers were on the eve of releasing their self-titled debut with vocalist, Roxanne Gordey, when they were snapped up by Spread the Metal Records. (Having legions of rabid fans probably didn’t hurt matters.) They are now headed back into the studio to re-record Edge of Attack. If the new version is even better than their stellar self-produced version, I’ll be first in line to get it.

Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker sat down with Roxanne Gordey (lead vocals), Jurekk Whipple (lead guitars/vocals) and Denver Whipple (bass) to chat about their recent tour, the making of Edge of Attack, championship go-karting, the wonders of cake, and much more. Dive in for a behind-the-scenes look at all things Edge of Attack!

Crucified Barbara’s third album, The Midnight Chase, just might be the most fun you have with your clothes on this summer. This all-female outfit from Stockholm, Sweden isn’t in it for the angelic vocals and symphonic elements. Nah, the Barbs are all about straight-ahead rock & roll with raw-edged vocals and plenty of riffing. What else would you expect from a band that describes their music as “loud, dirty and sweaty”? But they forgot sexy. The Midnight Chase is certainly that … and FUN too.

Crucified Barbara

Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker sat down to chat with Mia Coldheart, vocalist and lead guitarist for Crucified Barbara. Dive in for Mia’s take on The Midnight Chase, touring with her rock sisters, naked arboreal adventures, and much more!

Kontrust

The Austrian cross-over band, Kontrust, is such a quirky mash-up of musical styles that one has to wonder how the band formed in the first place. Since it is more fun to just make up an origin story than to do actual research, that is what we decided to do. So here is our wholly fictitious account of how Kontrust came to be: Members of a yodeling troupe, reggae band, pop group and metal band met up in a bar, and proceeded to challenge each other to drinking games. After endless rounds of keg-stands, beer pong and quarters, someone decided to up the ante. "Hahaha, we should all write songs together." "Nah, that would never work!" "C’mon, it’ll be fun." And so they did, and their songs were infectiously fun, indeed. The end.

Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker sat down with male vocalist, Stefan, for a behind-the-scenes look at the wacky world of Kontrust. Dive in for a closer look at Second Hand Wonderland, life on the road, lederhosen, sock puppets, and much more! Enjoy.
